J.COLE CONVEYS POLITICAL FRUSTRATION ON "HIGH FOR HOURS" .
‘American Hypocrisy, Oh, Let Me Count The Ways’ begins the BET and Grammy nominated rapper in his new single, High for Hours, produced by Elite and Cam O’bi.
Following the release of his fourth studio album, 4 Your Eyez Only – which achieved official gold certification just four weeks into its December release – J.Cole has dropped his first song of 2017, albeit quietly, in the early hours of Monday morning.
In the non-album track released on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and days away from America entering the Trump administration, Cole uses impactful, lyrical wordplay and soulful arrangements to speak from his heart on politically charged issues relating to the past and present.
Cole is not one to shy away from issues that some may find difficult to address. He dives deep into the darkness surrounding modern day America, tackling issues of police brutality, discrimination, oppression and hypocrisy, and spends the second verse giving us a window into his conversation with President Obama at the White House. He references religious ideals such as ‘Thou shalt not kill’ contrasted with the excitement and celebration of death like ‘LeBron had just scored a basket’, inviting listeners to question themselves.
It seems that J.Cole has a lot more to say and wants everyone to listen hard and well! Have a listen below. What are your thoughts?
