As we previously reported Prince's estate Bremer Trust filed a lawsuit on behalf of NPG Records against Tidal for alleged copyright infringement.

In November '16 Roc Nation filed papers claiming that it had exclusive streaming distribution  rights of the late singer's catalogue. This was contested by the lawsuit filed by Bremer Trust which alleged that Tidal had only been granted a three month exclusive license deal for Prince's new release 'Hit n Run' (album) and that having put up 15 more Prince Albums on the streaming platform, amounts to an infringement,

Aspiro, which is the holding company of Tidal, have now filed a defence. In their submission they reportedly challenge the validity of NPG Record's copyright registration as well as accusing them of copyright misuse. While strongly maintaining that Tidal were authorised to stream Prince's catalogue and despite Roc Nation asserting in November that negotiations by Prince's estate for distribution deals with Apple and Spotify could potentially a breach of their rights, no counter claim has been entered.
