InnerCity Griot - Celebrating the sounds of the African diaspora!
On the 6th July Emerald Live present Inner City Griot to bring the sounds of the African diaspora at the iconic Jazz Café.
The name of the event encapsulates everything the night will represent:
“A West African historian or storyteller who uses oral traditions such as music and spokenword to preserve the memory of society; their specialities being ceremonies and cultural celebrations.”
Rich with heritage and culture the sounds and trends from the African continent have long influenced nations across the Globe. Perhaps in the last decade or so the rise and dominance of Afrobeats has been most notable, particularly in the U.K. where its evolution has seen the emergence of sub-genres such as Afro-trap, Afro-swing and Afro-house.
While InnerCity Griot is set to celebrate and highlight the eclectic talents of the diaspora with an evening of live music featuring performances by 808INK, Afronut Zu, Silvastone, Cisse Djamba and Intalekt , the purpose of the event runs deeper than music. Emerald live also focuses on the intricacies between the creative arts and community development. Through its partnership with North London based charity ‘KORI’, InnerCity Griot offers all of its profits to further KORI’s mission to inspire, elevate and educate inner city youth with creative currency.
Join us as we bask in the glorious sounds of Afrobeats heritage at one of London’s most renowned and celebrated music venues, which boasts the likes of Amy Winehouse, De La Soul and Ahmad Jamal as previous performers.
